Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to present a resolution in the State Assembly on Wednesday, urging the Union Government to take immediate steps to reclaim Katchatheevu Island.

The resolution underscores that retrieving Katchatheevu is the only long-term solution to protect the traditional fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen and to mitigate the ongoing conflicts caused by the Sri Lankan Navy’s actions. Stalin’s proposal calls for a review of the Indo-Sri Lankan agreement and diplomatic intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka to secure the release of detained Indian fishermen and their boats.

The resolution is expected to receive unanimous support in the Assembly, highlighting the state’s strong stance on the issue.

In a parallel move, CM Stalin has also written to the Union Government, requesting a meeting with key officials to present a memorandum on concerns regarding the proposed delimitation process. Stalin, along with MPs from various political parties, aims to press for a fair and transparent approach to delimitation, a matter considered crucial for Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

This request follows the first meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on delimitation, chaired by Stalin on March 22 in Chennai. The meeting was attended by leaders from multiple states, including Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann.

The JAC unanimously adopted a resolution demanding that any delimitation exercise by the Centre should be conducted transparently and only after consultations with all stakeholders. Stalin reiterated the urgency of addressing this issue, stating that it directly impacts the well-being of the people of Tamil Nadu.
